Legal aspects of independence from England

The political union of Scotland and England is a treaty of 1707, which it may be possible to revoke.  The legal position can be argued and would be subject to court rulings, ultimately by the Supreme Court.  The recognition by England of a legally recognised and successful referendum is the most certain way that there will be international recognition of Scotland as an independent  nation.
